Thanks so much for taking the time to upload this lost gem on YouTube, Grinnygog! Us fans of Burt and Dolly and this overlooked film appreciate your efforts.

It's a beautiful song and a gorgeous scene. It's too bad it wasn't included in the film. And why wasn't it? Because it took the focus off Dolly?

reply

NO way! Dolly would never have allowed them to cut something because it took the focus off of her...plus she WROTE the song. She apparantly wrote tons of songs for the film. I read somewhere that the writer Larry L. King hated Burt's voice and had it cut. I don't know what power he or Dolly would have had - usually it's up to the producers or director, isn't it? I wish the director was still alive - i'd love to write to him about the film and try to get him to make an extended version or something. I'm hoping that when the film makes it to Blu-ray, "Where Stallions Run" will be included as a bonus at the very least....fully widescreen! I'm so glad that I hung onto my videotape all these years......no one else seems to have it.

Had you seen this scene before? Thanks for leaving the comments at YouTube. It's so exciting to see how many people are getting to enjoy this!

reply

Thanks for the reply! I know Dolly loved working with Burt, and I would think she would fight to keep this song in. I would just hope she would have more pull with the director or the studio if they didn't want to include it, but maybe she wasn't as powerful at the time.

I don't recall ever seeing this scene before, and I've seen this movie in the theater and I have the VHS tape. Are you saying it was released on the videotape? Could I have a different version?

I know that Burt's not a singer, but that's part of the charm here. He doesn't have a horrible singing voice, and I would think this scene would have a lot of value to Burt fans. Part of this song's appeal is Burt is very folksy and honest, and he doesn't care that he's no Kenny Rogers or Willie Nelson.

No, this scene was only seen on the original network television showings of the film. It's never been released in a theater or on video or cable. It probably hasn't been shown on network television since the late 80s. Some people claim that the song is listed in the end credits of some of the early videotape releases.........if so, I'd love to get a screen shot of that! I've never seen it. It wasn't listed on the television airing I have with the actual scene in it!

I totally agree with you about Burt's voice. The song is so much more sincere and heartfelt sung by a man who isn't a professional singer. I don't know if you have the DVD, but there's a short documentary of the film and Burt says that he asked Dolly for her honest opinion on his voice and said if she did not think he could sing he wouldn't dare sing her songs.

That's interesting that "Where Stallions Run" aired on TV showings of the film but didn't make the video release. Perhaps the network needed to fill out the time slot because I'm sure a lot of the movie had to be cut. You were smart to tape it on VHS -- and we are lucky you posted it on YouTube!

Burt released an LP that I saw in the used bins a few years ago. I collect vinyl, and I regret not buying Burt's album. As I recall, it was overpriced and I decided to pass on it. But I think "Where Stallions Run" shows Burt at his most honest, and the fact that he's comfortable enough with his voice to sing a ballad speaks volumes about his value as an entertainer.
