Dolly's efforts to liven up Burt's wardrobe

I was with Dolly as she comments on Burt's underwear (those dreary boxers!) and how she went to great lengths to improve his wardrobe. I had to slo-mo the sequence where Burt emerges in his spiffy bikini briefs...even at 46, the man was/is the hottest thing since Tom Selleck and Alec Baldwin combined. Perhaps his discomfort about "parading" around for Dolly's benefit was not even acting - it was genuine! (a damn pity, too)...

reply

Guess I'm not the only one to hit slo-mo when Burt dons the briefs. Burt gave a great performance in this film, and his body was smokin' to boot!

reply

I totally agree with both of you - he looked absolutely gorgeous! The sexiest man to ever have graced the planet! Have you checked out the Cosmo centerfold he did? Woohoo! :)

reply

Yes, I remember seeing the Cosmo centerfold a couple decades ago. Major-league hot! That must be posted somewhere on the Web. If I wasn't at work right now, I'd search for it ...

reply

Here's one link to the Cosmo centerfold that I found..

Of course I don't see why the fellow had to be so modest. I am terribly curious as to what's underneath that hairy left arm of his! heh ;)

reply

Thanks for the link. That's a scorcher! Burt is the ideal male. Today, unfortunately, that hairy look is out of fashion in favor of smooth, steroidal clones.

I'm visualizing myself as Burt's left hand right now. I can dream, can't I?

reply

O I know, I think it's really rather pathetic that celebrity men are shaving their chests... They end up looking like girls! * sigh* :)

Like you, I've frequently visualized myself as his left hand too, I wonder just *how* many others have done the same! :) I love how "tongue in cheek" the picture is, only a man of real confidence could pull this off. It's super sexy without being vulgar, it's ingenious.

reply

Yes, a man of confidence, but not a man of arrogance. I was a wee child at the time, but I remember the Cosmo spread causing quite a stir at the time. I get the feeling they didn't do much, if any, airbrushing on the Burt's pics ... or his pecs. They didn't need to!

I think the men were much hotter then because, for one thing, they had no idea how hot they were. Today it's very manufactured to the point of being feminine.

As an odd side note, do you remember when the National Lampoon published a Cosmo spoof and had a Henry Kissinger centerfold?

reply

Excellent point, that he's not a man of arrogance, only confidence, people so often confuse the two. No air brushing, I agree, it's all Burt... ;)

I only saw the centerfold many years after it had first been published since I'm not American and didn't know he'd done it. (It was the surprise of a lifetime when a friend handed it to me!) It must have been an extraordinary thing to do, I still cannot fathom why he did it. :)

I agree that celebrity men used to be hotter, I guess they were just more "genuine". Burt was a *real* man, there don't seem to be many of those left... :)

Kissinger in Cosmo, you *must* be joking! :)

I actually held the Cosmo with Burt in my hands many years ago. I don't remember if this was in a used bookstore or a friend's house. Had I known how valuable it would become, I would have bought them all when they were released even though I was 9 at the time. For the longest time, I was under the impression that Cosmo was a skin magazine because of this. And I was confused why they would have women on the cover but, in Burt's case, men on the inside.

It is remarkable that Burt did the spread. I believe this was about the time "Deliverance" was released. I don't understand why he did it either, but it certainly didn't hurt his career. Actually, I'm sure it helped! But it was unprecedented at the time. I remember hearing Cosmo paid him quite a bit.

As for the Kissinger spread, it was in a National Lampoon parody of Cosmo. I'm sure they superimposed his face on someone else's body. Those were the days before Photoshop.

reply

That's adoreable! :) I had no idea the centerfold has become very valueable, though I suppose it should be quite rare by now.

I have no doubt it helped Burt's career, but it's very strange that he even thought of it, if indeed it was he who thought of it. They must have paid a fortune.

I'm sure that it would be very difficult to even find one person who would want to see Kissinger without his clothes on! :)

I remember thinking when I saw the movie the first time that Reynolds looked old, was loosing his looks and his period of stardom was coming to an end.

Now I'm two years older than he was when he made the movie and would LOVE to be in the shape he was then. How time reeks revenge.

Looking at outtakes, the two had fun filming the scene, but I think it was Dolly who had it contracted than at no time could either be naked while filming the scene.

She did a great job of maintaining her dignity without being a prude, for if you notice, in every scene where Burt turns her back to Dolly, she gazes at his ass and smiles!

reply

She should have spoken to Burt about his toupée. His rug looked atrocious.

reply

His rugged chest on the other hand...

"Live long and prosper"

reply

Dolly should have given Burt some singing lessons.

Watched this movie just now for the very first time. And yes, when he got undressed...he was H-O-T!! Damn!

If you love someone, set them free. If they come back, nobody else wanted them either.
