Since this got so far off the initial subject...
First of all, yes, the film was made in the '80s. But it's loosely based on real-life events (that took place in '73 -- though it almost feels like late '60s in the film). I never saw Jewel as a "mammy" type. They showed glimpses of a geniune friendship between Jewel and Mona (as well as a friendly ribbing between Jewel and Ed Earl). Interracial relationships were still incredibly taboo in '73 (hell, they were still taboo through the '80s), so I don't see a "racist" problem there.
As for DeLuise's Melvin Thorpe being a stereotype, obviously you've never heard of Marvin Zindler, the real-life newsman the character was based on. Adored by the people of Houston, Zindler would be a laughing-stock anywhere else for his insane theatrics, bad wigs and Elton John glasses. Zindler even performed "The Sidestep" during one of his segments last year as a comment on escalating gas prices. While Zindler's not particularly effemanate (which DeLuise naturally is), he's sort of a freak of nature. Marvin's bio is here:

An article about the real events (from Zindler's own newstation) is here:
