I used to own a first edition VHS of this (wore out-broke-didn't replace). Anyway, this question is the burning moat. THe actors are fighting by the moat, which is oil covered by sand. A torch is thrown in the moat. Instead of the moat just catching fire, it BLOWS up, then catches fire. On my edition, I notice the camera shake from the shockwave and the actors stagger from the force of the explosion. Is this mistake (it has to be a mistake) in later editions ?
The explosion was not a mistake. I worked art dept and was there for almost every shot. Most of the crew was far away on a hill above the set because of the big explosion, while a few crew and stunt players were down near the fire. The closer shots with actors were shot with separate smaller explosions, although as I remember, Marc Singer, (a really nice guy and hard worker) was in the middle of some pretty crazy fire effects, and without much protection! One of the weirder parts of that scene was that we had fiberglass horses that we cut the legs off of so they looked like they were sinking in the moat, which was not very deep except in a few places. For some reason I saved those horse legs for years! It was a lot of hard work, but a fun movie to be a part of!
