I enjoyed this movie as a little boy, was rated Pg & one of the movies in rotation in vintage HBO days. I was surprised to hear Mel Gibson bash the movie on a Tonight Show appearance. It may not be the best movie in the world, but it's got beautiful scenery, a solid cast, & shows the brutality of war without going overboard.
I watched this for the first time a few days ago and was quite surprised. I didn't know Australia made this film. Very impressive.

I remember Mel Gibson appearing on the Late Show with David Letterman back in probably the late 1990s and when asked whether he'd ever acted in something that was less than brilliant, Gibson joked about being in a film called Attack Force Z. Because of the name of it, I assumed it must have been a dodgy attempt at a sci-fi movie. A belief I held on to until I finally saw the movie today and was actually shocked that it was a war movie set in WW2. Anyhow, that being said, I have to say it really wasn't bad at all. So, I would have to agree that it was underrated.
