How could a family afford this house in the middle of a recession?

Whether or not you say this is a prequel (which of course the action would have occurred in 74) or a sequel (7 after the Lutz family splits ) which would have taken place in 82, there was a deep recession in both years. How could a family afford a house like this in the middle of a recession?

You know it´s a movie right? Just kidding.

Wasn't the father a car salesman or something, well I don´t know either.

After the first murders, the house sold for dirt cheap; when the Lutz's ran away, the house was probably another giveaway to some cheapskate; also, the early 80s recession did not affect everyone (but interest rates were around 15%)

Todays economy is worse...

The DeFeo family bought that house in the mid sixties.

Apparently this movie took place in the early to mid seventies despite the 80s walkman and styles. Remember when Sonny pulls up to the house in an MG. It was a new car because he tells his father how fantastic the new car is. The Defeos lived there from 65-74, but this movie clearly takes place within a month and not over a 9 year period. This movie was clearly a work of Hollywood and ripping off The Exorcist at times . Ronnie Defeo was never exorcised. His lawyer William Webber admitted that he and the Lutz's made up the Amityville Horror over several bottles of wine.
