Depending on what we compare it with ...
... this movie can be rated as "fairly good" or "very good".
Since it is the Halloween night, I treated myself to an eighties horror movie. Alone in the Dark turned out to be a nice surprise. Overall, I would rate it as "fairly good". A nice build-up followed by tense home invasion. Not as intriguing as Funny Games but still nothing to be ashamed of. But given that Alone in the Dark is supposed to be in the same category with such stupidities like Friday 13th or Sleepaway Camp, I would have to rate it as "very good". It is much better than most 80s slashers. More nuanced characters (from both sides, bad and good), villains played by actors who can actually act, some rather intelligent humor.
