What was Hooker thinking? If it were real

Just saw an episode "Psychic Terror. Hooker was pursuing full size diesel Tractor, while he had a citizen ride along. His car easily could have chased this truck, however he decided to pull up along side and begin raming into the side of the truck, with no effect. He then put the patrol vehicle in front of the truck and tried to slow it down, but was pushed into something and went airborne landing on some gas pumps, which of course exploded. In the real world, he would be fired for using techniques like that, which were not only very ineffective and allowed the suspect to get away, but put him, his ride along and the general public in danger, resulting in thousands of dollars worth of damage. Yes I know it's only T.V for entertainment, but it makes his character look really stupid.

While I'm critical of cop shows that attempt to be serious, I can't do so with this one- it's always been over the top (or perhaps on top of the hood ;)) entertainment. Expecting consequences for actions here is like expecting the A-Team to actually hit someone with one of the 50,000 rounds they fire per episode.

I do recall a recent episode where Hooker was suspended, but he kept on working the case anyway.

In the real world, landing on top of gas pumps that exploded would really get you fired (the 500 degree kind).

Note to writers:
If you must kill off a character, make it the sunglasses dude on CSI Miami!

Hooker's mind works so fast, even he can't comprehend what it's saying.

That said, in the episode I watched today "Model for Murder" Hooker gives chase to The Bad Guy, and he waits until they are near the pool to punch him, now, I know it looks cool to hit a guy into water, but it feels much nicer, softer, than pavement. I thought Hooker was "tough as nails"? I'm doubting my earlier assumption.
