Corrigan's rank?

What is the significance of the rank insignia on Corrigan's sleeve? He has two stripes as opposed to Hooker's three and is always referred to as "Officer" Corrigan. The only ranks I recall being mentioned on the show are sergeant, lieutenant and captain. Are there some other, lower ranks that an officer might have where he/she would still be referred to as an "Officer" as opposed to a specific rank?

Thanks!

The insignia on Corrigan's sleeve is usually referred to as a corporal in most police organizations. In Los Angeles, he'd be a Police Officer III.

The LAPD ranks are described here:

In the fictional LCPD, there's no telling.

3 stripes for sergeant. 2 stripes in most police departments is usually a training officer, or corporal.

Martin Milner's character in "Adam 12" also has two stripes later
on in the show. He is refered as a senior patrolman.

Officer Romano just asked him: "Do those two stripes give you permission TO ABUSE PEOPLE?!" I would say, no, but Hooker seemed to like Corrigan giving Romano some guff.
