Cops driving without seat belts

Just watched episode 23 of season 2 entitled "Raw Deal", and was shocked to see Hooker and Romano driving down the street without seat belts. They were hanging there plain as day unsecured above their shoulders. That sure wouldn't fly today. Strange how some things change over time.

I dont' know the answer, but I do not believe it was the law to wear your seatbelts back when this show was on tv. I know they still should have had them on, but sometimes things are overlooked.

Seat belts are for sissies.

Seatbelts didn't become law until the mid-to-late-80's, after the second season which was 1983.

George Carlin: It's all bullsh-t and it's bad for ya.

REALLY late response, i know, but I felt the need to reply to it :P

From what I understand, the seatbelt laws don't always apply to cops. This is because the may need to get out of their cars quickly. Though they put them on if they're driving fast.

I may be wrong about this, though.

You are right. The seat belt law does not aplly to public employees in an authorized emergency vehicle See California vehicle code section 27315(g)

Go figure.

Yeah, it was something I noticed too in the early seaons, but in later seasons they do start wearing seatbelts, so I guess it had something to do with changes in the law..
