But there was a similiar scenario in a Diff'rent Strokes episode.
In it, Kimberly and Arnold are cold and stranded somewhere, and unwisely accept a ride from a stranger (a middle aged man who, at first, seems like a really nice guy).
The man takes them back to his apartment. Apparently, he was a photographer of some kind, who had worked with the space program. As Arnold is very impressed by this, the man takes him into another room with a TV to show him a videotape (I'm fairly certain the VCR was of the type you described) on the subject. He then secretly locks Arnold in the room, while becoming more "friendly" towards Kimberly.
When the video is over, Arnold attempts to leave the room and discovers he's locked in. He bangs on the door and makes a lot of noise, until the man comes and ties him in a chair, put putting tape on his mouth (again, much in the manner you refer to). Eventually, Arnold frees himself and, escaping out a window, goes back to Mr. Drummond and the police for help.
At the episode's end, the man has Kimberly in his dark room and attempts to assault her. She manages to grab ahold of a dish full of chemicals, and throw it in his face. She goes to run out of the room just as the police burst, and arrest the man.
If memory serves, NBC used to show Silver Spoons immediately after Diff'rent Strokes, so it would be easy to confuse plot elements of one with the other.
Yes I believe you are correct about Silver Spoons came on before Punky Brewster! I remember watching these shows at that time. I even remember when they had the great show Voyagers! I loved that show and it is shame that they got rid of it so soon.
There was an episode of Silver Spoons where one of Ricky's friends, or maybe it was some younger kid, let it slip that his father had kidnapped him. Something about "minutemen" sparked a memory as to where the kid used to live.
Arnold appeared on an episode of Silver Spoons. He was supposedly working on a school project with Ricky. They hacked a computer. Something about government missles. Then ran away when they thought they would get arrested.
I think a little girl Ricky was babysitting for told him her mom or dad (can't remember which) kidnapped her after losing custody.
Hey I do remember that Sam because Diff'rent Strokes eventually went to ABC. I remember that and it did not last too long on ABC before it was canceled. Diff'rent Strokes spent a majority of the time though on NBC.
I saw the rerun of that and they did that ep in much more detail than they honestly had needed to. Since the kids ARE supposed to be rich, they just could have called a cab or yes have been using the family limo to do errands. They did not have to get in the strangers car. And after that nobody goes for any follow up therapy. The police don't offer any survivor services either.
But Silver Spoons did do it's own kidnapping episode. Rick decides to be a babysitter---where he gradually realizes that the little girl he is babysitting may have been kidnaped from her mother by her father. This episode is far less graphic than the different strokes kidnapping episode.
Rick (who is in high school by now) is neither kidnapped OR the kidnapper He is the 'hero' who intervenes on the victim's behalf. After the incident however, Rick stops babysitting lol. He IS shaken by what happened. That part doesn't make sense, he saved a child's life who was in his care. He should have learned that being a baby sitter is important.
