Did Kirk ever meet Michael?

I seen the first episode when Michael was introduced, but missed 2 episodes afterwards. Was there a scene when those two interacted or did Kirk already leave?

reply

No. They actually only both appear in one episode but they have no interaction with each other. Michael's 2nd episode(where he meets and falls for Stephanie) was the last episode produced in the 2nd season and Kirk had already finished the last episode he would appear in("Send Her, Ella").

reply

I was watching the episode when Stephanie and Michael met. Kirk was in that episode I think only in the very beginning and Michael walked into the dining room and Dick introduced him to Joanna and later Stephanie fell for him the first second. So that must have been the last episode of season 2.

Yeah, Michael walks into the dining room about 5 seconds after Kirk leaves.

reply

I stand corrected. It is odd how Kirk walks out of the room(and the series itself) and Michael walks right in. I wonder if Kampmann knew at the time that Scolari was going to replace him.

reply

I am sure they knew they were going to replace Kirk. That's why he has about five lines, then walks off to the kitchen, never to be seen again. They were fulfilling his contract. Then, they literally turn that part of the story over to Peter Scolari who comes in seconds later and dominates the rest of the episode with Dick and the Vermont Today stuff. At this point, we can safely say Michael is now a major cast member. Though Scolari's name would not appear on the opening credits until the next episode, which was the start of the third season.

I think it's odd that CBS aired this episode out of order. Because we then go to another episode where Michael is not present and Kirk has a major part in the story. It is obvious that this episode was the last one filmed of the second season, and it should have been the last one aired by the network, since it sets the stage for the following seasons.

What really happens because they are aired out of order is that in the next episode Stephanie is talking about dating someone else and that she is still looking for Mr. Right, when she just met Michael the week before. Though in reality, she did not hook up with Michael until after this, if the episodes had been aired in the correct order.

I wish in syndication they put them in the correct order, but they seem to be following the broadcast sequence, not the production sequence.

I really enjoyed both characters and wish there could've been a way to keep them both.

reply

I wish that there were scenes between those two.

Kirk should've showed up on the last dream episode at least! Leslie too for that matter, but there may have been some bitterness going on...

Same with Frank Burns & Maj. Charles Emerson Winchester on MASH.
Same with Trapper John & BJ Honeycutt.
Same with Col. Henry Blake & Col. Sherman T. Potter.

All those actors were great & it would've been wonderful if Trapper had interacted with BJ, Frank with Winchester etc.

Can you see Trapper & Potter in a scene?

Or Col. Blake & Winchester?

There was enough room in the Swamp for other surgeons.
Remember, Spearchucker & Ugly John use to reside there before poof, they were mysteriously gone (The producers wanted to focus the ensemble show on Alan Alda.).
