In the episode where George is set up with a blind date, he complains that Tieville is 8 miles away. In a very close following episode, he says that he made a trip 46 miles, all the way to Tieville so as to get Stephanie some ice cream after she had an appendectomy.
Doubtful. Remember, George was a handyman, not a mathematician.
Reminds me somewhat of an old joke I heard from years ago. This rich feller in Texas was talking to another about how rich he was. He said, "Why, I can get in my car and drive the whole damned day without ever leaving my property!"
The other feller glanced over at him and said, "Yeah, I actually know exactly what you mean. I used to have a car like that myself."
I would debunk that. First of all, George is a great carpenter- something that requires math skills. Secondly, George may be innocent, but he is definitely not dumb. Third, George mentioned driving all the way to Tiesville on bald tires, so obviously he was aware that the trip was not only lengthy in distance, but also in time. Fourthly, he said all of this in front of Stephanie and Dick- neither of the two corrected George or seemed confused by his comment.
"First of all, George is a great carpenter- something that requires math skills."
Not really. You just need to know how to measure things. Carpentry doesn't even typically require precise measurements. Plus or minus 1/16" is usually good enough.
"Secondly, George may be innocent, but he is definitely not dumb."
George was not only dumb, but he is dumber than anyone I've ever met in real life (not counting people with Down syndrome). There are countless examples of his stupidity throughout the series. The one I remember most from watching the show as a kid when it originally aired was when he demonstrated all of the pranks he planned to play on his friend, on himself.
