The way he talks to Mallory as a half wit is complete bs. I know it's a comedy and it's fiction but it kind of irks me as I watch now. No way would she brush it off like that in real life. She'd have serious self esteem issues I reckon. And Elise & Steven just let it happen.

Did you actually read what I wrote? There's a big difference between having fights and constantly undermining someone's confidence - and that's just what Alex does most episodes. Mallory is not dumb but she believes she is. She purposely didn't study for her exams to get into college because she believed she could not achieve. Her teacher gets tough with Mallory and forces her to push herself and study hard because she knows that is not true. Why did you think she thought that about herself? Maybe because she has been constantly pushed down her whole life by her elder bro that she believes it so?
It's a comedy I get that, but the joke was still being done in season 4 for crying out loud.
And no, I'm not an only child. I have a brother and sister.
Everyone in my family were smarter than me, but my sister was the worst. She belittled me & would order me out of the room when wanting to talk about things I wouldn't understand or be able to contribute to the conversation. My parents didn't object and yes, I still have self-esteem issues
shareIt's an age old media thing to show sibling rivalry. Either a smart one is mocking a popular one or a popular one is mocking a smart one. It happened more often years ago prior to being pc and becoming more sensitive to bullying.
Intelligent Alex belittled Mallory, Mike insulted Carol on Growing Pains, many tried to avoid Steve on Family Matters, etc. it was too popular of a formula and some real life sibling issues were then not only accepted but expected.
It isn't true that all smart people are nerds and that all pretty and/or popular people aren't. I can't stand the Big Bang Theory.
