Would you carry on watching,,,?

Would you keep watching The Comic Strip Presents... when/if they make new episodes in the future but don't have any of the old regulars in it and only have new, younger people?

There are pretty much only 2 ways TCP... can go from here I think and that's either to make no more episodes, or have new younger people in it since I can't really see Rik, Ade, Nigel, Dawn, Jennifer, Robbie, Keith, ect, wanting to be in many more (if any at all) future episodes.

So would you keep watching without them? Would you automatically dismiss it or give it a go? I would probably give it a fair go but I'd undoubedly find it hard to get used to it without the old comedy genuises.

I just love Rik, Ade, Nigel, Peter, Dawn, Jennifer, ect, and simply can't imagine TCP... without them in it. I already found it really hard to like Sex Actually even with Rik and Nigel still in it. It's just not the same...

On the 2005 documentry (its in the box set). Nigel, Ade, Dawn and Gary Beadle said they would love to do more Comic Strip. Ade would like it to go back to the style of the old way and Dawn would like Pete to ring her when she is not in the middle of anything. But they would still need younger cast members as the originals are in there early 50s or late 40s.

Judging by the standards of the last one, probably not.

Have to agree. "Sex Actually" was just appalling. And if you really want to see how far off target Peter Richardson can go as a writer/director, check out "Churchill - The Hollywood Years". A tragedy.

Following up on the Carry On Columbus connection, it was interesting to see just how many of the CS gang were in it.

I would keep watching as you never know.

I thought Sex Actually was much better on a second viewing and Rik Mayall gave a good sleezy perfomance.

Here are a few episodes that i feel were not as good or as funny as Sex Actually.

Demonella (Forgetable and boring)
Wild Turkey (Stupid and far fetched)
GLC (Too much like The Strike)
Oxford (Unfunny and goes nowhere what so ever)
Space Virgins from Planet Sex (Very poor)
Jealousy (Forgetable)
Didn't You Kill My Brother (Too long and too slow)
The Strike (Too overblown)

I'd be interested to know how people rate my personal least fave episodes.

With the exception of "Strike", "GLC" and "Didn't You Kill My Brother", all of which I quite like, I'd probably go along with most of those on your list.

For myself, I'd also throw in "Consuela", "South Atlantic Raiders" and "Funseekers", which for my money is probably the worst thing they ever did. Even worse than "Sex, Actually", which wasn't so much bad, as about 15 years too late.

What is evident, however, is how poor most of the BBC episodes are, compared to the team's C4 heyday.

I quite liked Consuela. I think it works well as a good French and Saunders piece.

I know what you mean about the others though. South Atlantic Raiders went nowhere for me.

Funseekers shouldn't have been allowed to be a Comic Strip film. Its a bit better on second viewing but it didn't fit in with what the comic strip was about. It would have worked better as seperate series completly removed from The Comic Strip. Can't think why Nigel planner wanted to write about 18 to 30 hollidays.

Your right though. The BBC episodes sit very poorly next to the Channel 4 episodes. I just miss the anarchic style of the old films.

reply

Actually, i probably would still watch, but it would depend on who was in them.

I'd like young actors who are new to the business to be in it as when the comic strippers started out they themselves were virtually unknown.

i think it would be a crime to take actors already known and having done a fair bit and then giving them roles in the comic strip film.

They would then have a sporting chance of it working then i reckon, because the association with an actors past roles wouldnt be in the way.

for me anyway.

Unlike most people, I really love "Sex Actually". The oldtimers like Rik and Nigel, the sophomores like Doon, and the newbies in the leading roles were all equally funny. I pirated a dvd from somewhere and I've seen it several times. If they can do more stuff like that, YAY! I'd love it.

What on Earth does age have to do with it? Funny roles are there for young and old alike, that isn't even an issue worth considering really. I agree that Jennifer is probably too busy and famous to bother coming back to it, but they did get the very busy Rik last time so anything is possible.

The point is, would it be able to survive given how prejudiced everyone is now? I mean, everyone's got this thing about the new shows not being as good as the old ones, and the girl ones (Consuela etc) not being as good as the boy ones (BSers, Bad News etc), so there's all that expectation to worry about. No one would just start watching with an open mind.

I'd be more interested in Peter Richardson making another movie. Anyone else see "Lust For Glorious" with Eddie Izzard? Between that and "Supergrass", Peter has proved that he can make a full-length parody actually work. I want to see him do it again. Maybe starring Doon? She isn't doing enough nowadays. And Nigel too. And maybe they can bring back the mysterious and strangely cool Daniel Peacock....

Doon Mackichan had to take a couple of years off work because her daughter had leukaemia, although she's apparently now on the mend. Doon is currently making her comeback on the stage, in a new production of Joe Orton's Loot, so we may well see her back on the telly before too long.

If they did do more I would only watch if people like Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson were back occaisonly. I'm sure Rik would be glad to but Ade seems to be "reformed" now.
