i'm sure this must have been asked like a thousand times, but should i read the book first, or is the serie good enough (or better). will i miss anything if i don,t read the book, and will i still enjoy the serie if i read the book first
There is almost nothing missing from the TV series, most of the dialogue and voice over narration is directly taken. And most importantly, the spirit and feeling of the book shine through. But do read the book as well, and decide for yourself!
I've seen each episode numerous times, but only recently have I gotten around to reading (and enjoying) the book. The TV series is a very thorough and literate adaptation; plunge right into episode one and have a great time. But I agree at some point you should read the book as well. You'll be glad you did.
Just avoid the current film version, aka BRIDESHEAD REIMAGINED & REDUCED. Aside from the characters and the setting, there's very little of Waugh in this one.
Not necessarily. There HAVE been excellent movies made from mediocre books. The only one I can attest to at the moment is The Last Picture Show. It has been a long time since I read the book, while I have seen the movie a few times and it is a beautiful masterpiece. The book I can only say was depressing. At this point in time I can't judge the quality of the writing in the book. I know the author, Larry McMurtry, is much admired. But the movie is one of the best movies ever.
Oh, and while Evelyn Waugh was a genius as a writer, and Brideshead was his biggest seller, it is not either one of his better books, or typical of his work. It is beautifully written, as all his books were, but is sentimental nonsense.

To elaborate on this point, Waugh himself declared his own writing orotund and wished to edit this one after publication. He did write it in about 4 months and no not Jack Kerouac (lack of) style. Sentimental drivel? I suppose. But beautiful. I love it for that.
