...he busted the beer bottle with his arm? At that same time in the story, the police were invading his apartment, and did not find him but found the death mask in the closet. Where was the beer bottle scene supposed to take place?

That scene was before the police were on their way to his house. By the time the police got there, the ambulance had already taken him away.
