The reason this movie wasn't very successful

Tonight I am watching "Victory" on a cable movie channel and I was wondering why I didn't remember ever sitting through and watching this entire movie. I can remember this movie being very hyped when I was a kid and wanting to see it badly, I can only imagine why my mother wouldn't take me to see it, I'm assuming it was Rated-R. Well, to be quite honest, despite the fact that all of the actors and non-actors involved gave rather good performances it doesn't change the fact that the majority of this movie is rather boring. This movie is just too darn slow and it is slow for no other reason other than to stretch out a rather limited concept into the length necessary to make a movie. Perhaps some focus on the War, or showing how each of the men got captured would have made the movie more interesting, as it stands anyone can just skip to the last 15 minutes of the movie because that's the only part really worth watching.

The film isn't successful because Huston obviously directed it for profit. When you look at his other WWII films like Let There Be Light, The African Queen and Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison it's actually kind of embarrassing to think about the fact that this movie came from the same great filmmaker. Fortunately Under the Volcano more or less makes up for the mistakes of this film by looking at the evil of the war with a firmer eye.
