Why so many Ipswich Town players?

Apologies if this has been raised before but why were there so many players from Ipswich Town - John Wark, Russell Osman, Kevin O'Callagahan?

reply

I'm sure I heard something about Ipswich having their pre-season where ETV was filmed and some of their players were asked to be in it.

The story in then Ipswich manager Bobby Robson's autobiography is that a film person came and asked the squad if they wanted to be in a film. It would mean early starts, long days filming and getting a wartime short haircut.
"Does anyone want to do it? If so please raise your hand."
No volunteers
"Who's in it?" the players asked
"Sylvester Stallone and Michael Caine"
The players fell about with laughter.
"Who are you getting to do the football scenes, have you got any other players signed up yet?" asked Bobby Robson.
Film bloke looks at his clipboard and says;
"Er...yeah. Pele and Bobby Moore"
Immediately all the players put their hand up.

Great story, a shame Bobby Robson himself wasn’t in it too.

reply

Being professional footballers they probably weren't interested in playing the game with actors. But Pele and Bobby Moore on the other hand.......

i understand.

but it was chance to:

a. be in hollywood film. how many get this chance?

b. be in film alongside two of biggest movie stars in world in 1980.

and they laugh? i can understand reluctance but not laugh.

They had a bloody good team then as well. The season after Escape To Victory was filmed theey finished 2nd (to my lot the Villa) and won the UEFA Cup.

They also got to the FA Cup Semi Final as well, losing to Man City. Perhaps playing so many games is what cost them the title?
