This film seriously needs a proper digital format release. The Region 1 DVD from MGM could only be a ported over Laserdisc transfer, which is rather poor by even Laserdisc standards. I do see the film pop up on cable in a much better looking print, but it's a full frame presentation (and likely the theatrical version). It's odd that MGM has given "Manhunter" a Blu Ray release, but "Thief" gets neglected for no good reason. I would say put both the theatrical and director's cut on the disc via seamless branching, transfer the Mann/Caan commentary over form the old release, put together a featurette or two, and you've got a respectable package. It's only too bad we won't get any Dennis Farina interviews for it (RIP) as it was his first acting role, and the start of regular collaborations between him and Mann throughout the decade with Miami Vice, Crime Story, and Manhunter.
