Drive
I just saw Thief and find myself amazed how much "Drive" bears resemblance to it. Any thoughts?
Who's the black private dick that's a sex machine to all the chicks? Shaft!

You're certainly not the only one who thinks that; a lot of people have posted about the influence Thief must've had on Drive. I think that's one of the big reasons why I enjoyed so much, because it reminded me of Thief (as shallow as that may be, lol). Oddly enough, even when I first laid eyes on Drive's poster at the theater before seeing it, it gave me a Thief-ish kind of vibe.

Not to mention the use of synth heavy electro music on both. Drive is basically a homage to this film and The Driver (1978), nothing wrong with that really, both are forgotten little masterpieces, and hopefully more people will discover them after watching Drive.
shareActually Refn has stated not to have seen The Driver prior to making the film.

That I do not believe. Compare the opening scenes in both films. Not to mention the entire theme of a guy who lives to drive, who has no apparent attachments or history to speak of. I think Drive was a terrific movie, by the way. It has enough of its own touches to distinguish it from Thief & Heat, and make it a worthy successor in this genre. I also believe that the influences of The Driver are much more overt than that of Thief. Yes, the style and mood of Drive resembles Thief a bit more, but the main character himself is straight out of The Driver. The main antagonists - all criminals - resemble those of Thief. Admittedly, the analogy with The Driver breaks down significantly due to the absence of cops in Drive (i.e. a Bruce Dern antagonist).

Drive´s a second rate knock-off of just about every every big league crime director that has ever lived and which only received such positive attention cuz it´s not totally idiotic, thus setting it apart from 99% of Hollywood slime anno 2011. A rather unremarkable, cheesy movie, all in all.

Why don't you see it a third time while you're at it?
both are good... obvious refn took a lot from mann in general... not just thief, but also manhunter and others... but the last 25 minutes of Thief is some of the best stuff I've seen on film.
sharehahaha! I was thinking the same thing! Wasn't entertaining even the slightest but saw it twice by choice spending 3+ hours of his life watching it. Love it.
shareI haven't seen "Drive" yet. (Yes, I know, that's crazy, but hey!)
"The Driver" is great! I saw it most recently at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, with Walter Hill in attendance. We got to see a new print too, which looked great! I love the ending of that movie. Classic!
"Thief" is great too! Classic Michael Mann. And, the Tangerine Dream score is too perfect!

Go over to the Drive board and see how many fan boys are talking about what a "brilliant, artistic, masterpiece" Drive is. If you complain about any aspect of the movie, they immediately break into tears and shout how "You just didn't understand it!" as they clutch a copy of the DVD to their breast. Little do they know it's just a carbon copy of Thief, with worse music and a less talented actor in the lead. I did like the action better in Drive though.
shareThief is a Masterpiece plain and simple and it stands alone!
shareDrive is based on a book. The writer might have been influenced by The Driver.
They're all good movies, though I liked Thief and Drive more than The Driver.
Both are good films. I like the villains in Thief better but Drive is more atmospheric. And it's far from being a "carbon copy".
Thief 7/10
Drive 8/10

So the critics that loved Drive are also fanboys? I like both films.
shareIs drive a great film then or is it just a poor remake of thief?
Really want to watch Drive now.
They definitely share similarities.
Thief is a better movie. Drive was enjoyable too.
Drive was quite good visually. Thief is more interested in telling a story.
