The whole movie could have been avoided. . .

If a *beep* General had made sure his weapon was cleared before going out to a party. Or even more importantly if he had never allowed himself to lose control of the weapon.

Sorry, been wanting to say that for over 20 years and I just recently came to this board.

'Course if he had it would have been a fairly short and dull movie.

Or if plans to close the school had been more realistic, i.e., years between the first announcement and the actual closure.

Yeah, there would have been rumours of the school closing for years before it actually happened. First, the board would have thought of ways to save money, raise tutition, cut back on programs, and, most importantly, question why the Headmaster was stockpiling weapons on the school's dime!! Closing the school would have been a last resort with at least a year or two warning.

The gun had to be fired. Chekhov's Gun demands it.
