Remake on the way
20th Century Fox and New Regency look to be interested in making a remake.
Frank E. Flowers will write and direct this remake of the 1981 military drama that starred Tom Cruise, Sean Penn and Timothy Hutton.

shareAs far as I'm concerned, remakes are completely unnecessary (in Hollywood at least) and usually suck! Only such remakes like "Nosferatu" one for example are good and needed. But thats German cinema we are talking about. "Taps" is definitely the kind of movie that doesn't need a remake. You just can't make it any better.

Remakes and sequels are money makers. Maybe they are not needed but they'll always be there.
shareI hate the idea, but remakes have been the way of Hollywood since Hollywood was born. Some of our favorite classics are, indeed, remakes themselves.
I've already played my (completely imaginary) metaphysical veto card by wishing the Casablanca remake out of existence. So, I am powerless to stop any further remakes.

Some remakes work. Many of the classic movies out there, such as Ben Hur and The Wizard of Oz, are remakes. I say: let TAPS get remade. Remember, TAPS launched the careers of Sean Penn and Tom Cruise (say what you will of him and his religion, you must agree that he is a great actor). Maybe the remake will show us some great new talent out there on par with Cruise, Penn, and Timothy Hutton.

I saw it at the movies when I was 11. It is one of the many movies from my childhood that should be left alone. First a remake of Red Dawn, what's next? A ripoff of Beverly Hills Cop probably, or even worse Police Academy.

I agree. The truth is that this movie was, at best, just mediocre. I think the only interesting thing about it is that it was the springboard for two future Hollywood superstars--Sean Penn and Tom Cruise. As far as inherent quality, there really isn't anything to write home about.
Of course,it would be considered mediocre nowadays since it was released 30 years ago.People also have to consider the year a movie is released. People at present won't have the same appreciation for movies done in the past UNLESS it was a classic nor a legendary film. Besides,do people nowadays would still find Charlie Chaplin funny in his silent movies at present? Probably not as much as when those silent films were released during their times.
Going back to the remake,I still believe that Hollywood should leave it as it is.Just like two years ago,the military cadets who would do the uprising won't get the same sympathy as they did at present since anyone who does those things these days would be considered a terrorist especially after what the country has gone through druing 9/11.

I vividly remember back in 1980 when it was first released ow it was considered, at best, mediocre. It even received poor reviews by some critics.

shareTrue! Both positive and negative. I agree to the earlier comment that it should have no remake but my point that now is the time for a Taps remake or else a special 30th anniversary edition of the film should it would never have a remake.
