I thought his soundtrack to this movie was excellent. Really catches the atmosphere of this underrated film.
Everyone compared this to Deliverance when it first came out (even the ads on TV). I really don't see the similarities--except for the "strangers in a strange land in the south" premise. The sequence in the Cajun village stayed with me for weeks after seeing it the first time. It had a nightmarish feel.
Kudos to Fred Ward for playing one of the most hateful characters on his impressive resume, and the late character actor Brion James for doing such a good job as the mysterious Cajun they capture--their reunion of sorts in The Player ten years later was a treat for Southern Comfort fans!
Focker why do you hate cats?
