shareThey're both really good. I like that in Southern Comfort the whole military presence in the bayou is symbolic to the military presence of American forces in Vietnam.
shareI preferred Southern Comfort.
For years, I've heard about "Deliverance" and a bunch of films that were inspired by it. I watched most of the films I'd heard were inspired (including "Rituals" and "Hunter's Blood") and really like them. So, I finally saw "Deliverance" a couple of weeks ago. I was a bit disappointed. It was okay, but not nearly as good as people made it out to be.
Well, I watched "Southern Comfort" last night and I absolutely loved it.
I guess sodomy ain't what it used to be.
shareSouthern Comfort is much better. Deliverence only has a couple of decent scenes, the rest of the film just tails off from them. Nothing at all happens in the last third. Southern Comfort however keeps the tension up the whole way.
shareSouthern Comfort without doubt. The climax to the film takes some beating...
One of the true greats ......Halliwell movie book gave it top marks - Quite rightly.
It only gets "top marks" in the recent editions of the guide; those produced during Halliwells lifetime give it no stars at all. IMO the truth lies somewhere in between - excellent from a technical standpoint (music, editing, camera work etc) and many individual scenes are brilliant but the script and characters are very baddly developed and despite the supposed vietnam metaphors, it does just feel like a "Deliverance" rip-off to me.
Tough question. I think "Deliverance" is a better movie talking about directing (Boorman) and acting (Reynolds, Voight). Nevertheless "Southern Comfort" is a bit more interesting to me (storywise). The message in "Deliverance" is too forced and easy to understand.
