Cribbs?

What happen to Cribbs, I walked out of my room to get a coke and when I get back Cribbs was dead...what happened to him, I heard it was the goriest death in the film by my friend.

It wasn't really gory, but it was disturbing and surprising as hell.

SPOILERS, obviously

As the men are walking through the swamp, Cribbs accidentally sets off a trap- what appears to be a platform of wooden spikes. As Cribbs sets it off, the platform swings up very quickly and impales Cribbs against it.

As I said, not very gory, but it caught me so off-guard that my heart was racing quite a bit.

Heh heh, I was waiting for it to happen:

I mean, these guys planted a load of traps right in the middle of the swampy pathway the soldiers were walking down... Is it a surprise that when they go around them the hidden trap is 'discovered'? ;) I was thinking, 'look where you're going, stop walking so fast, stop walking so far in front of the rest...you're gonna die!' And then he got impaled, so, well, it was still pretty disturbing but my psychic movie-watching skills were proven in that particular scene.

Easy to remember that Cribbs utters one of the best lines from the movie. Just after they find the unconcealed animal traps, Reece (Fred Ward) deliberately triggers two of them with a pair of loose branches and says, "Just like a steel pussy." Cribbs responds, "Damn, what kind of women have you been hanging out with?" Very effective.

As an aside, I always doubted that real Cajuns would actually set a trap with pointy bamboo-like shoots to spring up and kill a man (e.g., Cribbs). It seems to me that, in fact, this device in the movie is a thinly veiled reference to the fatal man traps commonly built by the Vietcong guerillas in Vietnam to kill American GIs.

The funny thing is when you watch in slow-motion, the spikes actually bounce off his chest and as they do, Cribbs grabs the contraption and pulls it back toward himself to make it look as though he's impaled.
