We saw them from a long distance but there were undeniably 4, not 3 hunters that could be seen during the scene where the soldiers first encounter them at the beginning at the movie. So, what happened to the 4th guy?
One Hunter is shot in the swamps. Second is stabbed in the groin, and presumably dies from shock and blood loss. Third, a bearded fatso, has his face smashed in with a rifle butt. The fourth is bayoneted to death before the two survivors run out of the shack. Simple as that.
Ok but I didn't see any hunter being shot dead in the swamps.I think that whilst in the swamps they fired at the guy who would later die bayoneted to death but missed him, and he hid behind a tree.
Nope, it's a different guy. They guy in the swamps is wearing a Davy Crockett-style hat (kinda funny-looking, really) and a long fur coat. Also, we clearly see four guys running after our heroes toss their self-made grenade, and only three guys getting off the canoe at the end. Further, he doesn't hide behind the tree, but falls there.
You are a very good observer.I watched the scene again in slow motion and with zoom and you are probably right, it's the fourth hunter. We can't know for sure if he is dead because he is behind the tree and the heroes don't have time to check out .Only two guys got off the canoe at the end.
Oh, okay. Then the third surviving Cajun must've been in the village to begin with. For all we know, he may have actually somehow signaled his mates to come and help him finish off the surviving Guardsmen. As for the guy behind the tree, I do believe he was shot dead. He doesn't jump there, but falls, and we never see him again. The whole point of him landing behind a tree is to add paranoia to the situation: is he alive and hiding, or dead? Since we never see him again, it's safe to say he's shoveling coal Downstairs.
I take your point guys - but I was under the illusion that we as the viewer are never quite sure just how many cajuns were out there looking for our guys...... We only presume 4 because thats how many we initially see early in the film, but I always thought that their are numerous cajuns tracking down the brigade and that no-one, even the friendly villages could be trusted...therefore its of great relief at the end that the US army truck shows up....although we know the initial four cajuns are dead...
Exactly - hence the sense of doom and foreboding at the sight of the truck in the last sequence. More Cajuns? More running through swamps when safety seems so close? No - safety. Freezeframe. Titles.
That's a reasonable assumption- Just because there were four in the initial confrontation, does not mean there are not more now. Think Deliverance! They went and told their buddies and told their second cousins who are also their brother in laws. Bwahahah.
I think there are four. One is shot in the swamp, so he's probably not dead. That would be an extreme improbability, but he's probably out of "conention", and has to fix his wound. He's disabled, and doesn't procede.
The three they meet at the cajun gathering, probably mean to avenge their buddies, one with a home gone, another maybe disabled for life.
The moustache guy gets a knife to the groin. He probably doesn't die, but he's out of action, and like the guy in the swamp in serious need of medical help.
The second guy is added to the wounded list. It's almost impossible to be killed from a couple of hits from a rifle butt.
The last guy is the unlucky one whom our pair of heroes can unleash all their fervor on, without worrying about reinforcements. Realistically, it looks like he is the only fatality among the trappers, although the others are "hurtin for certain". They repeatedly bayonet him, and this is probably fatal.
I think the second guy, as you call him, would be closer to death than just wounded.
Taking the broad side of an M-16 rilfe butt to the kisser is gonna do serious damage to ones now broken face. I'd imagine that's like getting hit with an aluminum bat that's filled with lead.
