Two questions....

1) Why were these guys in the National Guard? particularly the guys played by Boothe and Carradine. They were both early 30s (assuming the characters are roughly the same age as the actors playing them), so it seems unlikely they joined the Guard to avoid getting drafted and sent to Vietnam. Boothe's character is a chemical engineer, so he probably made a decent living. I don't think Carradine mentioned what he did for a living, but he seemed intelligent, and he arranged for the prostitutes they were supposed to meet, so I assume he wasn't in the Guard because he needed the extra money. Considering they didn't seem like the gung ho, let's pretend like we're soldiers kind of guys, and didn't seem happy to be there, why did they join?

2) How exactly did the Cajuns make the trees fall? Was there any indication of how they made that happen?

"In a row?"

Well, i have some theory about this scene, but it's pretty out there.

I remember seeing similar scene in some comic where some guy cut the tree but instead of collapsing it down he tied one end of the rope to it and other end on some other tree. Then when some people were walking next to the tree (one which he previously cut and prepared for trap) he cut the rope with the ax and tree fall down on them. But i'm not sure did the Cajuns did the same or similar trick in Southern Comfort.
