This is a POINT OF VIEW film
Am I the only one who thinks this entire film, which I think will eventually be a mainstay classic in the future, was made as an experiment in POINT OF VIEW?
What we really get here is the story as it would be told by the two survivors. They always come out of every situation as "correct, tough, forward thinking, etc".
Now, what if the two survivors were Poole and Cribbs? It would be a different story told.
Spencer and Simms. A different story, still with an emphasis on common sense, but with the characters acting differently.
Stuckey and Reese? Very different.
The coach? What if he was the survivor? Obviously, he wouldn't have been the one to go nuts. So it would've been others.
This would be an ideal film for a film class to experiment with. A good film class teacher would assign different teams of students with different pairs of survivors, to tell a point of view story, keeping as close to the original as possible, but with the ultimate effect of ensuring that the two survivors smelled like roses among thorns. You could pair up unusual combinations, too, like Stuckey and Hardin, or Caspar and Spencer.
I think, 50 years from now, this will be noted as the ultimate POV film, and be heralded as a mainstay, maybe a classic. I don't think we've seen the full potential yet for the History of this film.
Now who can argue with that?
