What a steaming chunk of corn-infested dung...

I watched a few clips of this horrid movie on Youtube recently to show a friend how lame it is. I hadnt seen the movie since suffering through it once as a teen in early 80's. Wow...it sucked then and suffice it to say, it hasnt aged well. Burt Reynolds made one Godawful movie after another once he got big in the mid-late 70 s and just never let up until Boogie Nights salvaged his once okay name.

reply

...and as soon as Boogie Nights was done shooting he proceeded to disassociate his name with it because he thought it was gonna be such a bad movie.

reply

I didnt know that, but Im not surprised. He pretty much shat the bed of his career after Deliverance, in my opinion. Im embarassed to say that i liked Hooper, but then again, I was only 12 at the time. Everything else he did sucked ass except for Boogie Nights. And Loni Anderson :)

Don't sugar-coat it....how do you feel about this movie?

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

reply

Yeah I really need to learn not to repress my emotions so much hahaha :)

Love your signature :)

reply

Love your sig and MB name as well...clearly a Manhunter fan as am I.

Thanks! And yes, I champion that movie every chance I get. It's a shame how many people have never seen it or prefer the other movies in the "series" instead of it. Red Dragon in particular is awful.

reply

Ditto....Manhunter is the best of the lot, and clearly spawned the whole CSI series, not coincidentally with William Petersen. The 2-Disc SE DVD is the best...

I recently had a theft in my home and one of the things that wasnt stolen was a box of VHS tapes that I've had for years, and in there is a tape of Manhunter that I've had since 1987 :) That's still the only version that I've seen on any media that contains all the dialogue and scenes from the theatrical release.

Wow! "A few clips"! That oughta be enough to call a movie a "chunk of...". Watch the whole movie, and maybe you might have a different opinion. While not flawless, this is a darned good "film-noire" pastiche. Much better than you make it out to be.

Re-read my original post. I've seen the whole movie before. It's complete dogs***.

"The psychologists call him a psychopath. They don't know what else to call him."

reply

Ok. Harsh call! I liked the grittiness of it. "Complete" seems extreme. To each his own, I guess.

reply

Totally disagree with the OP. I've always thought this film was a fun ride.

And I'm still waiting for a proper, widescreen (or Blu-ray) release.

That said:

That signature (and the film 'Manhunter' in general) rocks.

Wait a minute... who am I here?

This movie was great and by far one of Burt's best. He had a lot of respect from the industry after this and should have transitioned into more directing. The critics were particularly favorable and had high praise for Reynolds - even Ebert. Had Burt not done any more Needham films after Cannonball Run 1 and not gotten hurt on City Heat, I think he potentially could have done some excellent work in the 80s.
