I just got the DVD of this movie and finally was able to watch this it with much better quality than the VHS POS I had recorded years ago. It is still, without a doubt, one of my favorite movies.

One thing has always bothered me though and now I'm thinking about it again. When Smiley and the Chins have Sharkey out on the boat, Smiley sends the Chins out of the cabin after Sharkey starts crying when they remove his second finger. Sharkey then throws up the table pinning Smiley and grabs his gun from his belt and blows him away.

How did Sharkey know his gun was there? Is that where he liked to carry his gun, after all they did work together. Or was it when Sharkey first regains consciousness, the camera tilts up from Smiley's shoes as if that's what Sharkey first sees. Did he see Smiley's gun under his belt then?

Thoughts?

I've always figured that Sharkey saw it. I also have been under the impression that it's Sharkey's 45 auto that Smiley has stuffed down in his pants.

Good point about Smiley's gun.

You won't believe this but in the book by William Diehl, when Tom Sharky is undercover he uses a 9mm Mauser. He doesn't elaborate on the model, but it must be a 90 DA or a 90 HSc.

I actually went back to the scene just to check this out - when he comes to on the boat, he's slumped forward on the table. Then he looks at Smiley's shoes & keeps looking up til he's staring Smiley in the face. We don't get to see it, but from Sharky's perspective, he easily could have noticed the gun. Or he just knew Smiley carried there.
