Joseph Zito, you're a LEGEND!
I'd just like to comment on one of my favourite director's of all time Mr Zito. He has had a strong cult following among my mates and I in Melbourne, Australia for many years now. As a kid I grew up watching Red Scorpion, a decidedly unintentionally funny action movie starring Dolph Lundgren. The film also shares terrific support by M. Emmett Walsh and has an overriding sense of fun to the entire proceedings. It is one of the best 80's action films ever and is actually a bit of an underrated sleeper along with his early slasher film The Prowler, only recently discovered by many on the recent BLUE UNDERGROUND DVD. The Joe Bob Briggs website www.joebobbriggs.com has some fantastic reviews of several of his films.
Another classic Zito film is INVASION U.S.A, produced by CANNON FILMS, and they produced some truly fantastic films of the 80's. Runaway Train, Lifeforce, American Ninja, Cyborg etc...These are not to everyone's tastes mind you, mainly reserved for B-Movie fans, except for Runaway Train. INVASION U.S.A is easily the best thing Chuck Norris has done and this is due to the energetic direction of JZ. He made Chuck into one bad dude and it works. Couple that with terrific action scenes and some terrific one-liners and you're in for one hell of a popcorn movie.
When I was old enough my friends and I started getting into horror films, particularly the series Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm St, Phantasm, Hellraiser and Friday the 13th. JZ directed the fourth part in the Friday the 13th series and along with the first film is easily the strongest entry. Crispin Glover is also terrific in a small part. The Prowler is a highly underrated slasher film and the DVD from Blue Underground is fantastic. My mates and I are in awe of JZ's talents and have regarded The Prowler as a slasher film raised to a level of art. The plot isn't actually that great and the reveal of the killer is somewhat dissapointing, but the overall atmosphere is astonishing. The acting is relatively good too and just feels natural. The film is scary and suspenseful and contains fantastic death scenes, enhanced by Tom Savini's realistic gore FX. It is one brutal rollercoaster of a film! The music score is also amazing, one of the best ever!
Rock on Mr Zito. You have fans on the other side of the world!
