Pretty disturbing
I found The Prowler to be a pretty gosh-darned disturbing movie.
shareReally? More disturbing than all the other 80's slasher B movies?

Yeah. There was something about the contrast between the completely flat production values and the flair and sadistic enthusiasm of the gore that just got to me. Other straight-out slasher movies with Tom Savini effects like The Burning and Friday the 13th didn't get to me like this one did, despite having similar talent gaps between the regular scenes and the scenes with bloodshed.
It seemed to be getting off on the gore, and the almost porno-level acting and surprisingly real effects made it feel kinda like a snuff movie. Other disturbing gory movies like Maniac or Last House on the Left at least seemed to have a point to them, but the only point of the violence in The Prowler was that it was as gruesome and lifelike as possible.
I realise that what I'm saying could equally apply to many other slasher movies, but The Prowler sold the deaths so well that instead of seeming cheesy and sleazy like most of 'em, it seemed ugly and real and turned on by it.
I actually find admirable, in a sick sort of way.
You're right about the gore, when I saw the movie, I was almost falling asleep half of the time, but every time there was a death scene, I really waked up, and payed attention. It was drawing, I don't know why, I guess it was just the cruelness, the sadism of it. I've seen almost all of the new slasher movies(I'm gonna see some of the old ones too, they're just hard to come by), and none of them had similar death scenes. I just didn't find the movie as disturbing as you did, I don't know, maybe I'm too used to gore to get affected by it.
It was intense, though.

The only reason I bought this (and millions more) is because of the gore!

What was the movie with a killer that had 'chicken feet'??? I remember watching it when I was little but maybe I'm confusing it with something else. Somebody help me out!!!!
Chicken feet?! I'd like to help you buddy, I've seen a lot of slashers in my day but nary one in which the killer had feet like a chicken. If anyone can enlighten us, please come forward with information on this fowl-footed frightener.
shareHehehe...I know, it was sooooooo long ago and I'm probably way off on the chicken feet thing. I just remember that the camera was always showing the feet(instead of the face)and the killer was barefoot and had some fugly feet. I guess it doesn't matter. I'm pretty certain I saw this film though and that it was a "horror" movie since that is all I used to watch.
peace
Could be Friday the 13th Part 2,where you see lots of shots of the 'mongoloid' Jason's feet, they look pretty ugly.
shareIt's not Madman (1981) is it? He had some seriously gross feet and spent most of the film skulking about in bare-footed close ups!
shareYES!!! It's Madman, thank you very much, madonnamaniac!!!!!

THE MOVIE IS MAD MAN MARS, ISN'T IT? I THOUGHT IT WAS OK, BUT DON'T BOTHER WASTE YOUR TIME REALLY
shareOk, i dont know what people's problems are. This is a wonderful, unique slasher film. Its one of the BETTER friday the 13th rip offs out there. Along with The Burning. It is quite a nice peice of the slasher genre i would say. Way too underrated, i just dont get people's opinions sometimes. This movie is not too bad at all.
shareThe Prowler is disturbing given its coma inducing qualities, the gore scenes were nothing special, yes I've seen the bayonet through the head scene, you can quite clearly see the laughable prop stuck to the actors head. The pace of the film is so unbelievably laggard I'm amazed my VCR maintained enough power until the end credits.
Bottom line; I could think of a million and one ways to kill ninety minutes, The Prowler isn't one of them. A some what perverted tale, with an absolutely flimsy plot-line. I'd figured the killers identity as soon as the fishing trip was announced, go figure...
>>> ...you can quite clearly see the laughable prop stuck to the actors head.
Odd, considering it was a real bayonet through a prop head.
I just discovered (again) this movie today. When I was a kid, between 5-8, my dad and I used to rent a bunch of crappy and scary horror fliks every saturday and watch them all weekend, this might explain why I am the way I am, but that's beside the point lol. Anyways, I never knew any of the titles back then, I just remembered the story and some scenes, but today I found a copy of the DVD at a used CD play and it was priced 29.99 and labled "RARE". I was pretty shocked at the price then went on EBAY and found it for 9 bucks. Did I just find a good deal on EBAY or is the CD place ripping folks off?
shareYou need a pair of glasses and some ears. After the victim is stabbed through the prosthetic head Zito cuts to the actor, who by this point is wearing a pair of white contact lenses, the knife is actually a prop applied to the actors head. Funnily enough Tom Savini says so himself during the commentary, how odd...
shareTo your duck feet questions i belive you were refering to the The new york ripper as he spoke like a duck.
shareThis has to be one of the most disturbing slasher flicks in history.
It's dark and violent. Almost exploitation.
I love it.
"Hate is baggage, life's too short to be pissed off all the time".
Boslecta is sooo right. I knew it was the sheriff as well. Come on,it was obvious. I wasn't even shocked when he revealed himself. The plot wasn't all that good, the ending didn't make sense and the only thing I liked was the killings, which wasn't that many by the way.
