Where was Philly's mother?

I recently viewed this movie for the first time, and I fast-forwarded and skipped over a lot of parts to get through it, which is why I'm asking the question. I realize that in a fantasy like this one, there's no space for the presence of a mother, but was her absence ever explained during the film?

Actually, where was Eric Brown's mother?

In real life I hear any actor under 18 has to have a parent on the set during filming, so that must've been fun for this movie.

In the story- the vibe is that the mother died, but given how the dad behaves she might've just left.
