Don't miss the extra DVD 'Feature' film
There's an added short film included on the DVD, called "The Real Prince of the City," that has recent (2006) interviews with the real "prince" and many interviews with the stars, including Treat Williams, the book's author, and best of all, Sidney Lumet. I was awed by some of the production techniques and how and why they were used to create the emotional aura the movie gives off.
I'll stick my neck out here, but I saw it again last night (after many years)and feel it is overall a better and more powerful movie than even "The Godfather" series, or "Mean Steets." While those do a great job of giving you a close-up of the characters and settings, "Prince" puts you inside the characters minds. You actually feel and experience their inner emotions and thoughts.
One thing that surprises me is why Treat Williams didn't become a major star after this movie. Throughout most of it I felt his acting quality was equal to Michael Douglas's at his best. Yet he quickly moved down the ladder into TV land. Maybe Lumet was the true "Wizard of Oz" behind this film and that's what it takes to create incredible acting.
