As great as Jerry was on Law and Order, people should see him play a NYC Police Detective in this film. Jerry and Treat Williams both should have won Oscars. Warner Brothers should be embarrassed this film is not on DVD.
I agree with you. Now that Sidney Lumet is getting an honorary Oscar at the 2005 ceremony, perhaps Warner will get him and the surviving cast members together to record a commentary for a DVD release.
It's amazing that a film of this calibur has not been released on DVD. It's an Oscar nominated film from a brilliant director (the great Sidney Lumet) and it deserves to be released. Surprisingly Amazon.com doesn't even have a page where you can register to be notified of a DVD release.
i have yet to see this film. i'm sure it's gonna be great for me, another gritty corrupt cops movie by Lumet. The reason i haven't seen the film it's because there is NO CHANCE for me. No DVD avaliable!, it's incredible that you can purchase dvd versions of an endless pile of really CRAPPY movies not worth the dvd case in which they're put, but i don't even have the chance to see an acclaimed film by a great director like this. What's wrong with those guys from Warner??. Come on!
Jerry Orbach win an Oscar for what? he was hardly in it!
Treat Williams was brilliant though and probably deserved a nomination, I don't think the film was as good as I had hoped though, I preferred Serpico if I'm honest.
Second chances are rare man, you shoud learn to take better advantage of em'
Jerry was excellent in his few scenes, and Treat was outstanding in his many scenes. As for this film, I had trouble figuring it all out. The actors seemed to understand it all, though.
I rented this solely for Jerry Orbach - he was the best thing about the movie, even though he wasn't in it much, especially for as long as the film was. My 2 favorite scenes, are when the partners are all sitting around cleaning out a desk as they're leaving narcotics after so many years, and they start ribbing on the one guy for taking no-doz - that was funny! I also loved the scene when Orbach's character confronts Treat's character and tells him how he has all these indictments racked up & waiting & none of them are cops and basically tells him off & insists that he's not going to do things any way but his own. That was GREAT! I think everyone did a really good job in the movie, although I know I'm in the minority when I say that I wasn't impressed by Treat Williams. I just didn't believe his performance in many of the scenes and think that the movie would've been greatly improved had the main character been played by someone else.

But seriously, that said, while I personally think he was incredible, you're not the first to say you thought he wasn't. Some people just didn't take to him for some reason.
I was kind of ambiguous about William's performance as well. He overacted in several scenes but I'm partial to putting that on Lumet's shoulders as he should have seen it and filmed another take with instruction to bring it down a notch. I thought the film was just shy of being great on account of some things that were overwrought.
