I like Possession, but I think it would be more at home in a modern art gallery than at a cinema. Can anyone recommend anything similar to this (the style?)

There ain't nothin' like this movie, man. That's what makes it so worth seeing, even with its faults.

Maybe the closest might be some of Luis Bunuel's, such as DISCREET CHARM OF THE BOURGEOISIE or VIRIDIANA.

Another obvious example of psychological horror with extreme visual style:
Dario Argenti's SUSPIRIA. It is also one of the best horror films,period, that I have ever seen.

If you liked this movie, I'd recommend David Lynch's Blue Velvet, David Cronenberg's Videodrome, and Jean Cocteau's Orpheus. You should be satisfied with what you see.

David Cronenberg made some good art movies that have similar styles and plots, such as Naked Lunch, Crash, Spider, Existenz... David Lynch's Eraserhead is also a good example. But if you really have to pick one, please don't miss Cronemberg's Dead Ringers, a trully underrated masterpiece of the 80's. In my opinion, what makes Dead Ringers more disturbing and scaring than Possession and all others look-a-like movies is that the characters are preetty real, and the story could happen to any one of us.
