Adjani suicide...

Not sure what to make of this, I've just started watching Possession with Zulawski's audio commentary, and he describes why he casted Adjani for the part of Anna. He then talks in some detail about her committing suicide (cutting her wrists etc.) Devastated I came on here to check, but obviously she's continued working, and so I'm not quite sure what to make of it? Perhaps I'm mistaken, but I went and listened again... Could someone please clarify?
It's towards the start of the film when he describes this, just as Marc is in his meeting with the panel.
Thanks!

I think she TRIED to commit suicide when she watched the movie for the first time. Which I almost can understand!

why would you make a comment like that =spoiler=. Like a spolier is an automobile accessory!

he didn't spoil nothin'.

I'm guessing Zulawski meant she *attempted* suicide. His English isn't the best.

Isn't he referring to the character's suicide?

reply

No, he was describing Adjani's reaction to seeing the movie - I think if he was more familiar with the term 'self-harm' he might have used that, as what describes sounds more like highly strung histrionics by Adjani than an actual suicide attempt.

Wait a minute, I would have thought I'd have heard about this "suicide attempt" before if it were true. Are we sure this isn't just a confused rumor springing from the fact that Adjani's character rather horrifically cuts her wrists with an electric carving knife (but is stopped by Sam Neill) in the movie itself?

she cut her neck... Later sam neills character cuts the top of his forarm not wrist.

reply

Well I think Zulawski would know the difference since he was there....

reply

Anna doesnt cut her arms with the electri carving knife, only her neck It is sam neill character that cuts his arm. GO WATCH THE FILM BEFORE COMMENTING!

I cannot imagine any sane person attempting suicide because of a movie; I mean, it´s not like we´re talking about losing a football game or anything...

It's possible that Possession director Zulawski was speaking in his fractured English on the DVD audio commentary that Adjani had attempted suicide after seeing the end result of his film and thinking that her acting career was ruined, despite the fact that as Zulawski says in the DVD commentary that Adjani won awards for her performance in Possession(1981 Best Actress in Cannes & Cesar Award for Best Actress). But Zulawski also makes the erroneous remark on the DVD commentary that Adjani's acting career both in Europe and US was ruined after making Possession which was absolutely incorrect since Ms. Adjani made other great films in her native France such as SUBWAY,ONE DEADLY SUMMER(which got her another Cesar award),CAMILLE CLAUDEL( that got her another Cesar Award plus an Oscar nomination for Best Actress)and La REINE MARGOT( another Cesar award).Ms.Adjani is known for being the only French actress in French movie history to win more Cesar awards for Best Actress(5!) than any other French actress and that's definitely not proof of a ruined acting career! What Zulawshi is only correct is in his remark that Adjani lost her chance to succeed in American movies after appearing in box office failures such as THE DRIVER,ISHTAR & the 1995 US remake of DIABOLIQUE.
