How can you rate this move? (spoilers)

I watched the 2:04 version and I am at a total loss. Parts of this movie are brilliant. The cinematography, the framing, the gut-wrenching intensity, the acting (especially Isabelle Adjani), all top notch, plus the BluRay looks pristine. But then the story, was there one? To say this was Lynchesque you would have to look at Eraserhead for a similar tale of confusion. And what was it with Heinz Bennent's character? When he first meets Mark, I didn't know if they were going to have man-love, dance, or fight. And how about the big squid/mealworm or whatever it was, dafuq!?! "Don't open, don't open, don't open", pink socks, "you look vulgar to me", wha?
