Avoid this movie

This movie is so boring and so bad that i turned off the video when i saw it... it wasn´t frightening at all. The only good with it was Sam Neill´s acting. But the movie is more than 20 years old though... (No excuse) Watch The Shinig instead :P

"But the movie is more than 20 years old though..."

What?!!

No, The Possession was ver great! Great story, great acting! Adjani and Neil was a perfect duo!

reply

I don't know what that person was talking about this movie scared me. The creature doesn't scare me as much as Adjani does, her expressions when she is scared or crazy are very scary. Also the scene where she is cutting her arm is just too weird. The way the weather is always dark and gloomy is sad. Well that's what I remember I haven't seen it in two years. How is it again that she starts acting this way?

reply

I know this post is nearly 2 years old now but I don't care.
This has to be the stupidest post I've ever seen.

First off: Possession is not a horror movie. Its more of an avantgarde-flick that defies being put into a genre at all. The reason people categorize it as horror is because it has some creepy moments.

Two: 20 year old? Yeah. Like the age has something to do with how frightening a movie is. Like todays horrormovies are superior above all. He even manages to mention The Shining(spelled wrong though) just to top the post completely.

Well, no kids. This ain't a traditional horror movie.
Its a pretty freaky art-movie, and its extremely good too.

Is a deep dense movie, scary in the sense that they were on the edge making it, if you dont get it or dont like the story, but you like acting and performances, is a true delight to watch the efforts of the actors balancing on a very thin line, the subway scene of Adjani is scary and breathtaking for the same reason, you keep holding your breath expecting her to pull it off, and SHE DOES.

Is all metaphors about spoiled relationships and self destruction, you can almost see it clearly in the disturbing scene in which Adjani moans and begs wimping before a crucifix in a church, not a single word uttered, just moaning, you know then she knows her life is falling apart, and is begging for help.

i would agree that this is not a traditional horror movie.
i would add to what you say and call it an "avante garde horror-flick", more experimental than anything else. what makes it stand out is the acting of adjani which is mindblowingly disturbing. the problem with the movie is that it lacks layers, its almost always the same except for the sex monster which is gross. its definitely freaky and its got some unforgettable moments but i dont think its the type of film a lot of people can enjoy. that said, it's much better than most stuff these days and at least it has some scary scenes and like i said, great performance by isabelle adjani.......

reply

This is not the hollywood horror film. Very good drama-horror film!! The metaphore is great!!

reply

Avoid. I entirely agree. Completely nonsensical. One for the avant-garde brigade only.

I have heard a lot about the creature in the movie having some connection with the devil...it hasn´t...the movie is not about the devil at all.
In my point of view, this movie is about the children of a failing marriage.the kid is the only victim in the whole story,he didn´t ask to born....he´s in the middle of the insanity of his parents.
the end of the movie talks about this.....(Spoiler)when the creature, that has become sam Neill is going to meet the girl, who is Adjani look a-like...represents the beggining of a new relationship...the circle of life repeating itself....and the children can´t stand it....he begs:"No...don´t open the door...no...",what really mean:Please, don´t mess around again...let me live in peace...and then he commits suicide. He represents the unborn kids that don´t deserve to live in a mad house, like many houses even today, when there´s no room for respect between a couple.(Spoiler ends)
A great story.....with a lot of meanings....and the fun part is to discover something new everytime you watch.

reply

interesting point of view... never think about that.... really interesting

I have to disagree with you about the movie having no connections with god or the devil...(spoilers)
Step 1 - masturbate to the image of christ
Step 2 - get thrashed around in a tunnel posessed by something either divine or demonic...not sure yet
Step 3 - misconcieve afterwards in the same tunnel (as explained in the "faith and chance" scene/monologue)
In a way, it's the immaculate misconception, and what she nurtures/brings to life is a variation of the antichrist.

I am still quite baffled by the ending however.

I agree 100% with having to do with God. But unless you can define "devil" in support to your point, I don't think it have nothing to do in the movie. If I'm not wrong, they are always talking about God, but never about Devil.

Step 1 - masturbate to the image of christ

Right before this scene she said she feel like two sister fighting to exaustion and then (it's really creppy) the neartest close up on her where she don't blink, have dilated pupil and state something like "You stare at me. Look at me, etc". The very next scene there are an high statue of Jesus. He is head down, just like someone he's staring at her except that the statue don't "open the eyes" and look at her. My take is that it's a feminist idea about someone who cannot be respected, acepted or even loved, and the only way she knows to accomplish something, is by sex.

Step 2 - get thrashed around in a tunnel posessed by something either divine or demonic...not sure yet

What makes you so sure that she was "possessed by demons"? I think that she have so much suffering and despite that could lead someone to that Btw, I think that one of the movie ideas is that God and Devil are the same.

Step 3 - misconcieve afterwards in the same tunnel (as explained in the "faith and chance" scene/monologue)

I don't think that the "faith and chance" thing have any relationship with that.

In a way, it's the immaculate misconception, and what she nurtures/brings to life is a variation of the antichrist.

Well, now this one is out of hand. You have assuming thing, make connections, and put it all in a religious perspective. At least edit the "antichrist" part of your post, 'cos it's really stupid.

I am still quite baffled by the ending however.

Now I think you did get it. He talk about God twice (""God is like a disease", "God is the dead dog who..." sorry, I don't remenber the exactly words but in the scene folowed to that, he is in front of the Berlin Wall, a little scary or confused, until he see a dead dog and IMO, it was like a clue to him that "beware, 'cos good is around". He said to his wife take their son and go back to USA, and he arrive a little later, when the WW3 starts. So, I think that the point is that God is bad (the "God is a disease" line).

Really? I haven't seen it yet, but I'll undoubtedly watch it when I could get.

Even if only for the sake of Adjani..

The movie is not perfect but it is not forgettable either.

Whoops! Too late. I bought it and loved it. Bummer huh?

This movie has many memorable scenes and the cinematography is awesome.

Waht an arrogant idiot to order EVERYONE to avoid a movie on his say-so.

This movie sounds amazing and pretty deep. And if Sam Neill is in one of the main roles, it must be damn good.

So I'll be getting it out next week to watch lmao.

This a classic horror-drama-thriller.

If you like your movies pigeon holed into genre boxes don't watch this, but if a want a clever thriller with touches of horror, this is a great little flick!

The acting is slightly over the top but adds to the surreal tome of the piece.

recommend you check it out!

Hilarious thread! This isn't a movie for stupid people. It's as simple as that. If you're able to analyze films, and have the intellectual capacity to understand what a director is presenting beyond what is spelled out for you through dialogue, this movie is for you. If you don't know what the word allegory means, you've never read a book that was published before the 1980's, and don't think that a movie can say anything beyond the words that are spoken by the characters, find a Leperchaun movie and watch that one. You're who they were made for after all, and they won't confuse or bore you.

reply

I strongly disagree. Just because someone hates this movie doesn't make them stupid. You will find no shortage of intellectual heavyweights who absolutely despise this film and who will never go near it again even though they have only seen it once.

The film should definitely have a warning because it is probably the most visually and emotionally obscene film that has ever been unleashed on this unsuspecting world. It is volatile, repugnant, blasphemous, sickening, and pornographic.

I cannot imagine any sane person of healthy mind and spirit actually enjoying this monstrosity. If one wanted a preview of what hell surely must be like, this film would fill that role excellently, and to be certain, the ultimate form of torture, far worse than any lifetime experience in a miserable SuperMax prison, would be a forced, mandatory twenty-four hour screening of this film in a theater.

That very experience alone, I can assure you, would cripple, paralyze, and traumatize any normal human being for life, both physically and mentally. If you hated and despised someone and wished to do them the most severe and unadulterated harm, you would give this film to them as a gift, for most certainly they would walk away deranged and mentally incompetent and unable to function as normal human beings ever again.

It is a godless film devoid of all humanity and is nothing short of a purely visceral ravaging of the post-modern soul. It is the product of a sick mind who produced it for a sick audience.

In short, this film is insanity.

reply

by the way, I loved this film.

I'm happy that this movie apparently made you so miserable. ^_^ However, i think you're wrong in judging it as something vile. It's a very relevant film for the same reasons you dislike it. The director must have endured a terrible, terrible experience to bring something so bizarre to life; it's a sincere expression from his soul, and he is not afraid to explore the undesirable and the unknown. It's obvious to me he's a man who understands himself as best he can, and through Possession he's laid bare who and what he is.

This film is a near-masterpiece, if not a certified one.

If you thought this film was vile, then what do you think of films like Cannibal Holocaust, I Spit On Your Grave and The New York Ripper?

This is one of my favorite movies ever made! I think if a movie can affect people in the way "metashperes" describes it, it is suceeding in accomplishing something that many movies lack, an absorbing/involving experience. I think by not blatantly spelling things out it causes the viewer to have to actively think and process some of the issues being explored which in effect causes the viewer to be more involved and invested in the film. This allows a viewer like metaspheres to react the way they did and is a testament to the excellent quality of this movie. I wish this movie was more readily available for viewing. I think Anchor Bay did a limited run on it but it is hard to find the uncut version for less than $50 any more. I hope people give this movie a chance and aren't thrown off by the negative comments.

Did anyone read that? We must send a copy of this picture to every noraml person in the world. Thank you metaspheres (if that is your real name), if not for you me may never have found their weakness!
