talks about a spoken intro by Babenco - is this on other peoples' copies? Are there different versions? Any help appreciated.
Yeah mine has a spoken intro by babenco that shows where the actor that plays Pixote, along with his huge family, live.

Out of interest, does anyone know why this is currently unavailable (except as used/"rare" copies at $80 or more). Are the distributors exercising some sort of
self-censorship given the subject, (rape scene etc) in the current climate? Or is it just a commercial issue? Curious because it is such a good film.
(Actually, a lot of other Babenco films are listed as "currently unavailable"- wonder why?)

i ordered this movie off e-bay for 35 US. - other then that everyone else was asking about 80-100 dollars - and mine comes with the opening of babenco speaking...unfortunately this is an out of print movie...:(

DVD available through Facets in Chicago. We screened it this semester for a film hist class, BUT.. the subtitles went south about 30 minutes from the end. We had to stop the movie, and are in process of getting a replacement disc from Facets. It seemed like a faulty subtitle track in the disc itself but it could have been on our end.
Ours had the opening narration too
There are a couple of versions of this film. Most available are censored. There is a scene in the more expensive, rare edition of the boy urinating from the front. It is an actual urination scene and you can see the pee coming out of his penis. In the other versions, you only see him urinating from behind.
shareThe DVD I saw had the intro by the director ... I assume the urination scene was when Pixote goes to the toilet in the prostitute's apartment and finds something nasty in the bucket. It was shown from behind.

Is that scene necessary to further the story, or to add power to the imagery on screen? I think not.
I've been seeking the uncut version you are describing for some years now, and think I have potential sources, but I need to know the 'running time'. Can you advise? Thanks!
shareHi. I have the original dvds of both Pixote, and the second film after it about the death of Pixote.
In the original film from 1980, (with the commentary at the end and the entire film), the movie is 2 hours and 8 minutes. That is the length of the dvd as well.

When the judge looks out the window and returns to Lilica, we see him gasping, then it cuts to Lilica shaking, then there is an abrupt cut to Lilica in bed with bandages around her wrists, making us assume that the judge witnessed her slitting them earlier.
I'm wondering if there was a scene explicitly showing her doing that, that was cut.
Is it really so important for you to see peepee coming out of someones penis? That's not really what this film is about...
shareThere are obviously several different versions... most of the more modern ones - and depending on where you buy it - have been censored to a point. This is not surprising... in today's climate this film could not be made - or at least could probably not find a distributor, considering the fact that you see adolescent rape, and child nudity that just isn't allowed any more; to be quite honest - this film would be a pedophile's dream. Half of the images in this film, if passed around on the internet, would have the international police barging through your door in no time...
Nevertheless, the film is not exploitative of children... it simply shows exactly what they are living for real. The obscenity here is not the film - it is a civilization that allows such things to flourish.
I don't really want to watch it now.
