DVD Re-release coming April 20th!

Shocktillyoudrop has reported that Sony will re-release Piranha II: The Spawning on DVD in time for the remake!:

"It looks like the release date reshuffling of Piranha 3D has screwed with the plans of those DVD distributors hoping to cash in on the familiarity. The Alex Aja-directed remake was due this April until it was delayed to August 27.

Shout! Factory bumped its upcoming Piranha Special Edition DVD and Blu-Ray. Can't say the same for Sony Pictures Home Entertainment who are re-issuing James Cameron's Piranha II: The Spawning on DVD April 20.

Sony first released the title in 2003. It has since been out of print. Updated cover art is not in yet, however, we know there will be no notable special features other than a trailer."

No word yet if it will be presented in widescreen.

Too bad they don't mention whether it will be in anamorphic 16x9 or if it will be the same lame transfer released in full frame...

I never personally expected special features- I think "Jaws: The Revenge" has a better shot at special features in a (Blu) reissue than this particular flying-fish movie. In fact I would wager that this is WORSE than the last two "Jaws" sequels... So why would Cameron want to revisit it for bonus materials? He's the twice-crowned King of the World now (4th Oscar or not). Better yet, why would a super-corporate company like Sony even bother to go through the trouble for a true Special Edition? This should be handed over to one of the independents; they're the only ones who'd care enough to put a decent package together.

It always stung when Universal had done two souped-up Special Eds for the first two "Jaws" films, only to then make us Jaws-fans wait a long time for the nigh-featureless 3rd (what was it, like a year or two later? It felt like forever...) and then the 4th, which had actually been put out in non-anamorphic widescreen by Goodtimes in the earliest days of the format. But re-buying JTR on DVD just to get the superior widescreen transfer felt like a cheat, much like how every half decade they (Uni) find a way to squeeze out a fresh Special Ed of the original "Jaws" (without expanding at all on the sequel editions).

So, in looking at how "Jaws 3" and "JTR" have been handled, I can only hope that the transfer is decent and the aspect ratio is correct for the oncoming "P2" DVD from Sony.

Saw a DVD copy at HMV today. Has a sticker saying "Director of AVATAR and TITANIC."

Wonder if it'll sucker anyone in?

So it looks like it's basically a re-issue of the same DVD with an extra graphic on the cover that explains it's "From the director of Avatar".
