I think they dubbed Steve Martin's singing voice!

I know in Hollywood it's typical to protect the stars, and the dubbers are, ironically, the unsung heroes of these films (witness that we never learn who dubbed Debbie Reynold's voice in "Singin' in the Rain"), but after watching this film I rewatched Steve Martin singing on "The Muppet Show" and his voice was completely different!

In point of fact ALL the songs were original recordings from the era and lip-synched by all of the actors.

reply

In point of fact, there is one song that is not dubbed. This is the song the OP was talking about. Toward the ending. A reprise of the title song, I believe.

reply

It is not at all clear exactly what the OP meant, but the half-talking half-singing SM does on the gallows was not a "song" in relation to the original, dubbed songs throughout the film.

reply

Sure sounds like him at the end.

Here he is singing again.

I am Jack's complete lack of surprise.

I think I was thinking that it was so obvious that all of the songs are the original old-time recordings and are not the actor's voices, I just assumed he must have been talking about the final song. Looking back, you're right. It isn't clear what he was talking about. I apologize.

reply

I certainly think it sounds like him.

Let Zygons Be Zygons.

reply

And just to be clear, that WAS Steve Martin's voice "singing" in the gallows scene.

Yes we did. Betty Noyes dubbed Debbie Reynolds for "would you", and the Finale number. Everything else was Debbie Reynolds own voice.

reply

Sounded like it to me as well.
