Relation to Moon (2009) + Casting Choice for Connery's Son

I really enjoy this movie, I think it's an excellent SciFi twist on the 1950's western High Noon. I think the ticking clock related to the arrival of the shuttle was an excellent way to build drama and create suspense over the impending show down.

The first time I watched the movie Moon (2009), I was struck by the similarity of the countdown clocks. They look like near carbon copies of each other and both were on a mining station in space ticking down the minutes to the arrival of a shuttle and the final face off. Does anybody know if Outland really did serve to influence the creators of Moon?

Secondly I was always a bit turned off by the choice of the child who played Connery's son. According to the information on here he was born in 1967 so he would have been around 13 in the movie. It's not so obvious in the boy's lines at the start, but when he talks to his father via video later in the movie he seems like he should be a much younger child. The way he talks to his father and calls him "daddy" and the childlike questions he asks always seemed odd coming from a young teenage boy. I just feel like if they used a younger actor or maybe a daughter instead of a son, the character would have been more believable. Sure it's a nitpick, but it just seems like a glaring mistake to me. Anybody else notice this?
