Uncut Version any time soon?

it would be great if Universal gave us the original version of 'Nighthawks' as it's ending and Dick Smith's Make Up effects are still cut to shreds by the MPAA. i hope 'Shout Factory' get the rights and give us Stallone fans the version we deserve,

reply

It could happen, since another Universal movie HALLOWEEN 2 recently got special edition with some extra footage as a bonus. But i have to be honest with you,i don't think that there is anyone in Universal interested in finding uncut scenes from NIGHTHAWKS for some special edition.

It really hurts my heart, since Stallone is considered to be movie legend, that nobody cares about some movie which wasn't same great hit like ROCKY movies, but it still has so many fans who would be happy to see their favorite movie in some new version.

I listened many reports about how amazing original "blood and guts" version was:

"...disco chaos was like something out of COMMANDO movie..."

"...that dude got his head bursted like that guy from ROBOCOP..."

"...Hauer brains was splattered like Frank Booths's head in BLUE VELVET..."

And everytime i would hear something new i would hope that somebody will do something for this movie to get decent release, but nothing!

Can you imagine what reaction would that *beep* from Universal had if they pay a visit to IMDb and read some of these boards?

Would it be enough to get them to get of their asses and try to make some of us actually happy with NIGHTHAWKS DVD or BluRay editions,or would they simply say "*beep* 'em,Stallone would't give a *beep* why should we?"

reply

I guess it would help loads if someone from Universal read the boards, failing that perhaps a Facebook petition would help? after all their is hope as Richard Donner's original cut of 'Superman II' go released.

"I haven't heard about the comments on the cut violence you have, other than the ending being cut. But if more than just that scene was cut for graphic violence. I'd love to see the uncut version and see what it was supposed to be like."

Trust me,you don't know what we're missing in current R rated cut. Those comments that i put in my previous post here are mostly based on all the reports that i got from some of my movie freaks collegues about European theatrical release of Hawks. I'm pretty sure that there is some truth in those claims cause i found couple of pictures from uncut ending:

Yugoslavian lobby card of Wulfgar falling on hallway wall and leaving blood trail on it,German VHS cover with close-up photo of Wulfgar's face in pain from a shot not used in cut ending.

I could tell you some, maybe even all gore scenes and character development scenes that are confirmed to be cut out,but i already did that somewhere else before. Just go on "Uncut version of "Nighthawks" shown in Europe?" board and you will see what was cut by Universal pendejos. All of the graphic violence from original 140 + minutes long cut definatly sounds interesting.

Thanks to the fans like roegcamel and many others, this movie still stays very much alive on IMDb boards and hopefully some day we will get original version not only for Hawks, but maybe even for FIRST BLOOD,but that's another story.

Side note,Although i posted list of all deleted scenes from NIGHTHAWKS in my last post on "Uncut version..." post,i might make separete board with that same list.

The other issue is that the cut footage may not exist any longer. Or not enough if it to cut it back into the movie. If there is a more complete existing out there, there's a chance, but why? It's not a favorite of Sly's and it wasn't very popular.

From what I understand, there was a fire in the studio's vault sometime in the 1990s and several original negatives of many popular (and not-so-popular) films were lost/destroyed or at least damaged. The complete version of Nighthawks appears to have suffered the former fate.

reply

If the deleted footage is lost, they should just do what they did for Cliffhanger's Travers death scene, where they add a couple more gunshots in. At the very least, the added gunshots will tally with the injuries that appear on Wulfgar.

Also, they really need to sort that music licence out and put it back in.

The deleted footage appears to be lost, yes, but from what I understand, the audio for the deleted scenes still exists, and all we have to prove their existence is some still shots taken during principal photography.

reply

Wait, what do you mean "the audio for the deleted scenes still exists"?

Only "audio" proof of deleted scenes is one track from soundtrack called "Face To Face" which was used in original ending.

I'm usually optimist, which makes sense with some of my hobbies concerning movies, but hearing that talk about all the deleted footage from Nighthawks being destroyed in fire really starts worrying me.

The idea of this action classic fading into obscurity in its current truncated form (with the lousy new music inserted) terrifies me. Personally, if I had to guess I'd say that we're likely to never see this great film in its original, uncensored form.

As much as i hate to admit it, that's probably true, and it pisses me off.

NIGHTHAWKS has a sizable legion of fans now, and I know of several petitions that were sent to Universal, Shout! Factory and even Criterion, yet the movie continues to remain unavailable in its proper form.

I wasn't aware of all those petitions, but it's good to hear that fans are doing their best for release of uncut version of Nighthawks.

It's very surprising though that this movie has so many fans but nobody "on top" ever bothered to do something special for it.

If that fire at Universal really did destroy all prints of Nighthawks, then why they didn't say anything about it so far? Who knows, maybe deleted footage is still somewhere collecting dust.

With Wes Craven's Shocker and John Woo's Hard Target, Nighthawks is one of Universal movies which i would love to see released in uncut special edition but then again, it's Universal studio we're talking about here, so chances for that are very thin. But there is still hope.
