The name of the band/singer is Vicki Lawrence. As far as I know, you can find the song on an audio cd entitled "Super Hits of the 70's: Have a Nice Day Vol. 10. I found that on Amazon.com... Hope that helps you. BTW, did you know that Reba McEntire did a remake of the song? It's really good as well.

The Version of "The Night the Lights Went Out In Georgia" is NOT by Vicki Lawrence,it's not by Reba either. it's by Tanya Tucker and it has some alternate lyrics that go with the movie storyline that Vicki's Original and Reba's remake didn't have. the soundtrack also featured the songs in the film by Dennis Quaid and Kristy McNichol who both did their own singing. the soundtrack also featured Tammy Wynette and Glen Campbell. but it did not have "Tennessee River" by Alabama on it. though that song was one of the musical highlights of the film. (it's when Travis and that girl meet on the bus.) i used to own this on vinyl and it got destroyed in a flood a couple of years ago.

Well, Tanya Tucker's Version has no connection to the movie, Vicki and Reba's version does.

Really? Tanya's version was recorded specifically for the movie, is in the movie, and contains lyrics re-written specifically to follow the plot of the movie and is on the soundtrack album - which is now available in a digital version on Amazon - (The Soundtrack, not the movie - I WISH!) Anyhow I am not too sure why you would think that the Tanya Tucker version has no connection to the movie. They didn't use the plot of the Vicki Lawrence song for the movie, even though the characters have some of the same names. The Reba remake came many years after the movie.

There was a soundtrack. I assume it was released on vinyl and cassette. And I assume it is out of print. I wish someone would reissue it. Rhino Records usually does a very good job with that sort of thing. Here are the songs:

1. "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia" by Tanya Tucker
2. "I Love My Truck" by Glen Campbell
3. "Rodeo Girl" by Tanya Tucker
4. "A Little Gettin' Used To" by George Jones
5. "Imaginary Arms" by Tammy Wynette
6. "Amanda" by Dennis Quaid
7. "I Need You Strong for Me" by Kristy McNichol
8. "Hangin' Up the Gun" by Kristy McNichol / Dennis Quaid
9. "Melody's Melody" Instrumental by David Shire
10. "It's So Easy" by Billy Preston / Syreeta

There are also some songs from the movie that could be added to a soundtrack reissue as bonus cuts. They are:

"Baby Bye Bye" by Kristy McNichol
"Freeborn Man"
"Hound Dog"
"You Make It Sound So Easy"
"If You Don't Know by Now"
By Dennis Quaid
"Life Is Like a Mountain Railway"
By Kristy McNichol & Dennis Quaid
