Escape from New York pisses all over this
You know it and I know it.
shareI like both equally.
Here's an interesting plan that never came to be. I read this in an old Starlog magazine when I was a kid in the 80s. Back then, Mel Gibson and Kurt Russell were close friends and at one point, they were planning a combined sequel for both Mad Max and Snake Plissken. I think Snake was going to be sent to Australia where he would meet Mad Max.
I want to live in the alternate universe where that happened.
shareIt's hard for a American to say this, but Road Warrior is the superior movie.
Snake's character was a little over the top and had some cheesey lines "Tell it to him baby!"
The Road Warrior I think had 4 lines in the film, which made him cooler.
Also the climax was no contest, Road Warrior's was much more thrilling.
Escape From New York literally put me to sleep, so I doubt that.
shareI love 'ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK'
But it's a great initial concept, handled badly (and it drags in a few places) but it still has that trademark 'Carpenter' vibe.
To me, this is Carpenter pretty much finishing his run of legit good movies (and becoming more workmanlike) Although 'The Thing' came along a year later, it is (like it or not) largely remembered for it's (still) amazing special effects.
Now....
Mad Max 2 (The Road Warrior) is a stone cold classic, and is filmed, paced and edited in a way that doesn't allow the movie to drag. The performances, cinematography, music and stunts are (still) second to none. So, whilst I'm glad you're comparing two classics, I'm going to have to respectfully disagree....and proclaim The Road Warrior not only the better movie....but *still* the greatest action movie of all time.
The two films are quite different. I think Road Warrior is more exciting, but I think EfNY is much more rewatchable (I haven't watched Road Warrior in years. If EfNY is on tv, I stop and watch it every time).
shareI liked both.
shareEFNY presents the world you find comfortable to live in, no matter how hostile it can be, MM shows the world you actually would wish to escape from. EFNY presents a paradox, and especially more so its much superior sequel, where citizens of those city prisons are actually more free than those on the outside. MM series shows a hopeless world everywhere for me. That's the way how to watch these films, how they speak to your soul.
shareEscape from New York: a "world you find comfortable to live in, no matter how hostile it can be"?????
Escape from L.A.: a "much superior sequel"?????
Are you John Carpenter's publicist?
