Well, the poster art was nice

Director Larry Buchanan (not Larry Cohen, as one commentater stated) strikes again. Buchanan has never been compared to Kubrick, but a number of his films have been entertaining enough (in one way or another) to have at least been watchable (if only for the "giggle" factor). But the only horror here is the finished film. Buchanan seems to have fallen under the "Loch Ness Curse," as this--like most other feature films that have used Ness as a setting--ends up being an endless yawn-fest. Even the worst man-in-a-suit monster movie looks pretty cool when compared to the ridiculous rubber monster head roaming the woods around the Loch. And Larry's son, Barry, gives a performance that indicates he is carrying on the tradition of "Buchanan quality" we've all come to know and expect. In fact, half the Buchanan clan seems to be on hand here, especially behind the camera. Given how much potential you would think there is for a Loch Ness story, surprisingly few filmmakers have ever done anything worthwhile with the subject, and this is no exception. I recall this showing up a lot in the mid- to late 1980s on the USA Network. It would have been more at home on Mystery Science Theatre 3000.

I like the poster. A film could never live up to that. I don't want to see a threatening Nessie in a live action movie. A big production could only do that to any kind of satisfaction anyway. I'll stick to the Scooby-Doo version.
