David Kessler +1

Both were great, but I preferred the Howling. The Wyle E Coyote look of the Howling wolves was frightening. I still get a chill when the wolf grabs the folder out of Belinda Balaski's hand!!!

reply

Both are awesome. Overall the Howling has a better effects sequence. Though the initial snout extension in AWIL is phenomenal (David is in profile and his face bulges out) and it deserves kudos for being in bright light, AWIL looks quite fake in the close up of the protruding snout when it's facing the camera (right before it cuts away). Give me the effects of The Howling and the coolest werewolves ever!!!

Eddie's transformation is probably the scariest, but the pulsating cheeks and the pulsating forehead really annoy me. David's looked a lot more realistic though, so I'll probably go with David.

Eddie. That's waaaaay scarier to me. And the bubbling of the internal tissue under the skin is a nice touch.

Technically, they're close. And both scary.

David Kessler gets my vote.

Kessler I should think. Loved both, but there was a bit in howling's which looked a little bit like harry potter and his polyjuice potion (the bubbly face!)

reply

Eddie, because David Naughton is a douchebag.

reply

Eddie for me. Scary transformation scene. Absolutely bone-chilling.

reply

The Howling is good, but David 100%

reply

Eddie for the transformation.

But the vocalization of the werewolf was definitely creepier in AAWIL.

I find myself having a very conflicted opinion on this. The man who did the special effects for The Howling worked under Rick Baker so that makes it a very close competition. The special effects in American Werewolf are better, but I liked the final look of the Werewolf better in The Howling. John Landis should have listened to Rick Baker when he asked him to make the werewolf stand on two legs instead of four, which I prefer better than the bear/dog like creature that's in the finished film. Don't get me wrong, the effects still look great but the wolf/human hybrids that we see in The Howling look better. But this is a comparison between the transformations, not the werewolves themselves. It's a really close call, but my vote has to go to David Kessler in AAWIL.

Even though I may not like the final result, the transformation effects themselves are absolutely outstanding. Watching the film today in 2015 is just as impactful as it was when people saw it in 1981. It still looks real and it still looks amazing. And that's the power of Rick Baker's stunning work. I still liked the transformation scene from The Howling, but it looked just a little less convincing.

Eddie The Mangler gets my vote. Awesome work by the legendary Rob Bottin!

David!

Black men and a whole lot of *beep* white men have had plenty fun adoring my ass!

I always dislikes Kessler looking into the camera. It was goofy and takes me out of an otherwise great transformation scene.

Also, Eddie's trans is even longer and more elaborate than David's.

longer, yes, more elaborate, no way.
