This movie plus My Bloody Valentine, The Funhouse, Terror Train, When a Stranger Calls, Amityville II:The Possession, The Shining, The Friday the 13th series, these were the best horror movies ever made and they were all in the early 1980's. Halloween & Carrie were good too, but that was the later 1970's.

What's both fascinating and frustrating though is that while these films are now greatly admired, they were mostly villified at the time. Hollywood has yet to be able to recapture their spirit though when they tried (Scream came close). The industry is now focused on paranormal, found footage, and torture porn it seems.

I completely agree!! There is just something about them that is so atmospheric and creepy. I love all the ones on your list but would also add He Knows You're Alone and Prom Night. I watch all of these movies any time they are on TV...I love October because they are more likely to air then :)
shareYes, I agree. If people ask me for horror movie recommendations, odds are you're going to be recommended something from the 1970s or the 1980s. Those are the two best decades for horror movies without a doubt. If the people consider them "too old" then odds are they're not worth discussing movies with anyways.

Yes there is no doubt about it. I was born in 1970 and loved all these movies. In the age of vhs and video stores everywhere it was a great time. Just watched this last night and I'm going to watch fun house tonight for a little 1981 reminiscing
shareOne of the best parts of that era was browsing in the store and seeing all the interesting horror covers. My video store had the porn on the top shelf above the horror, so 13 year old me found that section of the store especially interesting.
shareI like eighties horror, but I don't agree. Last House on the Left, The Omen, The Exorcist, Jaws, Alien, The Brood, Dawn of the Dead, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Devils and many more from the seventies beat this early eighties slashers anytime.
